Hooray…it’s going to be a great year! I started the 2011 work year with a day of vacation from my paying job… how ‘bout that? I did this so I can work on the magazine...it’s not going to happen on its own, you know. And boy oh boy, is this ever a fun job! Thinking about what readers want to read and see. Thinking about all those wonderful designers—WOW—their projects are out of this world! I am really, really, really excited!
Something very important to us is charitable support and giving. Each issue will showcase what our readers do help others. Do you volunteer in any way? Donate quilts, money, or time? What are your causes? A homeless shelter? A children’s hospital? Quilts of Valor? The Million Pillowcase Challenge? The Humane Society? An environmental cause? Cancer Support? The Red Cross? Do you have photos of your work?
We know you have hearts of gold. We want to know what you are up to out there. Please comment here to let us know, or email us at homespunmedia@aol.com. If you include photos of your work, we just might feature you in the magazine!
I've been mkaing little quilts to donate to Ami Simm's Alzheimer's Quilt Initiative. It's amazing how small quilts can add up to a cure for this horrible disease!!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Lori, for sharing. We would love to see photos of your work, and to learn more about this initiative.
ReplyDeleteHi - I belong to a small group of ladies who make quilts for the "graduates" of a women's homeless shelter rehab program. If the women successfully complete the program, they can choose one of our quilts to take with them to their new home. We are truly blessed to have this ministry!
ReplyDeleteWow, Kelli.... that is great! Thank you for sharing this!
ReplyDeleteI belong to a group, Quilters for Comfort. We are an internet organized group and some of the members will create entire quilts and send to the designated bi-monthly charity (every two months we chose a different cause, usually non nationally recognized) some members send block sets to an assembler who might complete the quilt. Then there are the 'quilters' who will complete any quilt sent there way. We started in late 2006 and have donated over 800 quilts. In July some of us meet somewhere in the central U.S. and we spend a week making quilts of a patriotic theme to be donated to Veteran hospitals, VFW lodges, Wounder Warriors, etc...
ReplyDeleteOne of the quilt shops in the Black Hills where I live (Quilt Corral) put together fabric kits and patterns for quilts to be sent to victims of Hurrican Katrina. When the earthquake hit Haiti, the shop did the same thing. Several members of my quilt guild, the Minnekahta Quilters Guild, pieced tops for these two projects. Local long-arm quilters did the machine quilting. When a terrible forest fire destroyed many homes in our area, our guild was able to make and furnish quilts for those who lost their homes in the fire.
ReplyDeleteKatie and Marilyn! What wonderful causes! It is so great that you have done so much to help so many people! Thank you for sharing what you and others in your groups have donated, it is really inspiring!
