Beautiful Progress, Little Effort - Somerset Medallion Quilt

What I like about this project is every tiny bit of work in results in noticeable and beautiful progress.  Like most of you, I have very little free time.  But I can sit down for a while every now and then and hand stitch some petals.  Next thing you know, they'll all be complete.

The project is presented in 4 installments throughout our 2013 line up.  Part 1 was in the Spring 2013 issue.  I'm now on Part 2, presented in the Summer 2013 issue.  Once wrapped up I'll be "current" by starting Part 3 in the Fall issue.  I plan to complete that before the final instructions are revealed in the Winter 2013 issue which will ship in October.

As you can see I am working on the flower petals.  If you read the last post, you'll recall that I failed to cut the vine fabric on the diagonal.  I haven't bought new fabric for the vine yet, so on with the petals!

Who else is working on this project?  I would LOVE to see your pictures.  Please share!

Judy

Confession of a Quilt Magazine Publisher

I am a rookie quilter.

So far I've only made seven quilts.  I started several years ago when Jeni and Gretchen opened the Woolen Willow.  They had a Jan Patek trunk show, and when I laid my eyes on Jan's "Morning Has Broken," I had to make it.  It gave me goosebumps and brought tears to my eyes.  Mom helped me make it, and I enjoyed every stitch.  With plenty of distractions, I took forever to finish it.  But it's finished and hanging prominently in my living room, and after all these years it still makes me happy.

Dawn Heese' Somerset also resonated with me l and I just had to make it.  I began in late April, and though slow by many standards, I am happy with my progress.  Yesterday I began installment 2 from our Summer issue by sewing the 6 1/2" background borders to the medallion.  Next step will be black piping. I love it!

Note to self:  when cutting strips for a vine, cut fabric on the bias!  After cutting all these perfect strips of green, I called Jeni to ask if I was supposed to cut on the bias.  She said "yes."  Hmmm...well, I'm sure I'll find a great use for these pretty strips.

Be sure to jump over to Jeni's blog, "Jeni from the Willow."  She shared her latest "Small Quilts Club" project, as well as photos of Joyce Weeks (Geoff's Mom Pattern Co) at the Woolen Willow, and a nice photo of Jeni with Lisa Bongean at Spring Quilt Market.

We want to hear from our readers! What do you want to know about our designers? We will use your ideas for our next Designer Notes question! Here are examples of questions we've used in the past:

What was your best sewing mistake that turned out to be a brilliant success?
What prompted you to start designing, whether it was on your own or with your sister, mother or best friend?
Who taught you to sew or quilt?
What are your favorite organization tips?

Comment on our post to submit your question! Thank you for your help :)

International Quilt Market 2013

Wow... Quilt Market was amazing! It was so nice to meet several of our designers and quilt shops who I communicate with on a regular basis. Everyone was so wonderful.

Here's a picture of my mom (Judy) and I at our booth!

We were so happy to be across from Pretty P and Mama B Designs booth! This is Madison and Bonnie - they are mother and daughter, too!  Their project, Morning Latte is in our Summer 2013 issue.

Our neighbors booths.. Bits & Pieces by Joan, Suzanne's Art House, Reets Rags to Stitches, and Heart to Hand. They were all so nice!

Martha Walker of Waggons West Designs - she designed "Board Game" in our Fall 2012 issue and also has a fantastic project coming up in our Fall 2013 issue!

Jo Ann Mullaly and Jeni in Cathy Cardiff's booth

Here we are on the Moda riverboat cruise. This was so much fun!

A beautiful view of the sunset from the boat..

Portland!

We're here! And we're so happy to be here :) Portland is beautiful. We are getting ready to go set up our booths (Woolen Willow and Primitive Quilts and Projects). The convention center is amazing! And everyone is so nice and happy here. I am blown away with some of the creativity I'm seeing at everyone's booths! A ceiling made of quilts, a fabric waterfall, a 10 x 10 snowstorm - just unbelievable. I am posting a couple pictures of the beautiful art this convention center has in the entrance. More to come!
